Easy Vegan Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise is a cold sauce loved by many people, and while some argue that it was created way back in 1756 by the Duke of Richelieu’s French chef in Minorca, others claim that it was invented long before that.
In this article, I clear up some questions about mayonnaise and share with you a recipe for vegan mayonnaise that is super easy and quick to make.
❌ Why Isn’t Mayonnaise Vegan?
Traditional mayonnaise is made with eggs and may be considered ovolactovegetarian, but I’m pretty sure it’s not suitable for vegans.
With that being said, making vegan mayonnaise at home doesn’t take a whole lot of effort and with only a few ingredients (which you can find in literally any supermarket), you can make an uncompromising mayonnaise.
Nowadays, it is possible to find vegan mayonnaise for sale, especially in health stores or larger supermarkets, in fact, there are brands such as Chosen Foods, Mr. Organic, and O’Dang Mayo that sell vegan mayo.
👩🏻🍳 How To Make Vegan Mayonnaise At Home
To make homemade vegan mayonnaise you only need 5 minutes, a hand blender, and a tall container where you can partially fit the hand blender!
The mayonnaise I share below is creamy and a great alternative to traditional mayonnaise. It has only 7 ingredients. This recipe uses regular sunflower oil and soy drink. You can also use tofu, aquafaba, or even yogurt as the base, but I’ve used these two ingredients as they’re pretty easy to find no matter where you are.
You can use it as a dip for dipping vegetables and potatoes, as a sandwich sauce, or in salads. In any case, if you’re a mayonnaise fan, you’ll love this vegan alternative.
🌿 Vegan Mayonnaise Recipe
Ingredients
- 100 ml of unsweetened soy drink
- 150 ml of sunflower oil
- 1 clove of garlic
- 2 teaspoons of Dijon mustard
- 2 teaspoons of lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 1/4 teaspoon of black pepper
How To Do It Step-by-Step
- Add all ingredients to a narrow, tall container or the hand blender cup.
- Mix the ingredients using the hand blender. Keep the first few seconds with the blender at the bottom of the container, then move the blender up and down until the ingredients are fully combined.
- Adjust the seasoning to your liking.
👌🏻 Replacements & Tips
The ingredients in this recipe are cheap and easy to find, but if you are considering changing any of the ingredients, I have some suggestions for you:
- Sunflower oil – it is not mandatory to be sunflower oil, as long as it is an oil with a more neutral taste and aroma, like canola oil, for example. Coconut oil and olive oil have a very intense flavor and therefore I don’t recommend them. However, olive oil fans can add a tiny bit of it to the recipe (without using too much!), just to give it a little flavor.
- Dijon mustard – you can switch to regular mustard with a milder flavor if that’s to your liking.
- Lemon juice – I prefer to use lemon juice, but you can also use apple cider vinegar or both.
- Seasonings – salt and black pepper are the basics I usually put in, but you can add other seasonings of your liking, or remove the black pepper.
- Sweetener – this is optional. I personally don’t put sweetener in the mayonnaise, but you can add a few drops of sweetener, such as maple syrup or agave syrup, for example, for a more balanced flavor.
