Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl (No Banana)

I love smoothie bowls, but I don’t tend to use exotic fruits, especially dragon fruit, as 1kg costs between $30 and $40 here in Portugal. They’re also not that easy to find.

As I’m currently in Thailand, fruits such as dragon fruit and mango are way more affordable, and thus I felt it was the perfect opportunity to make this dragon fruit smoothie bowl!

If you’re looking for a delicious dragon fruit smoothie bowl that happens to not contain banana, then I’ve got what you’re looking for!

🗒️ Ingredient Notes

I don’t think there’s an eye-catching recipe that is as easy to make as the smoothie bowl.

You literally only need to have a fruit base and a few toppings for an amazingly-looking and delicious breakfast.

Let’s face it, it’s the right way to start your day.

Base

For the base, you’re going to need:

  • Frozen dragon fruit
  • Frozen mango
  • Frozen strawberries
  • Full-fat coconut milk.

And voilá, you’ve got your smoothie base.

Topping Suggestions

Not gonna lie, one of the most fun things about making a smoothie bowl is adding the toppings and arranging them beautifully so that I can send a picture to my sister and brag about it!

Here are some cool ideas for toppings you may want to try out:

  • Chocolate chips
  • Nut butter
  • Sliced fruit
  • Grated coconut or coconut flakes
  • Granola
  • Chopped nuts & seeds.

Personally, I’ve used chocolate chips, chopped dragon fruit, and chia seeds for the much-needed Omega-3 fatty acids— but you can definitely pile on your favorites. I think a dash of almond butter or peanut butter could work quite well, too!

👨🏻‍🍳 How to Make Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowl

1st step

Chop dragon fruit, mango, and strawberries into dice-sized cubes, or whatever small shape you prefer, and freeze them solid.

Typically, I like to have a smoothie bowl for breakfast, so I tend to prepare them the day before and leave them in the freezer overnight. Though, to be honest, 4-5 hours should suffice.

2nd step

Add the frozen fruit and half a cup of full-fat coconut milk to a blender or food processor bowl. Feel free to cut back or add more coconut milk depending on the consistency.

3rd step

Blend or process until the fruit is broken up. Continue to process it until you have soft ice cream consistency that is both thick and creamy.

4th step

Fill a bowl with the dragon fruit smoothie and top with chocolate chips, dice-sized cubs of dragon fruit, and some chia seeds for your daily dose of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Feel free to add whatever toppings you may like.

❓Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my dragon fruit purple and yours white?

I admit that the purple color is certainly more eye-catching and makes for fabulous pictures, but not all dragon fruits are purple inside.

The ones I’ve been buying here in Thailand tend to be white inside, so much that it reminds me of an actual dice when I chop it in cubes.

In other words, there are different varieties of dragon fruit, and I’m using the white one for this recipe. Feel free to use whichever you can get your hands on.

Why does my dragon fruit have no taste?

There are several things that can affect the taste of dragon fruit, but the biggest one has to be its ripeness. If yours has no taste, it’s probably not ripe enough.

However, do keep in mind that even if you use a ripe dragon fruit for the smoothie bowl, it’s likely that its flavor may be overwhelmed by other fruits— particularly mango, strawberries, and banana as those tend to have more defining flavors.

Is dragon fruit good for your health?

Indeed, dragon fruits are good for your health, like most fruits.

It’s a great source of fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, which are known to boost your immune system and improve digestive health.

However, keep in mind that a smoothie bowl may not necessarily be healthy as it will depend on what ingredients you’ll use.

For instance, in this recipe, I’m using chocolate chips, which can’t be defined as being healthy— mainly because it contains processed ingredients.

Description

A smoothie bowl recipe that combines white dragon fruit, mango, and strawberries for a refreshing and healthy start to your day.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Smoothie Base

  • 1 cup frozen dragon fruit
  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 cup full-fat coconut milk

Toppings

  • 1 tbsp chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1/2 cup diced dragon fruit

Instructions

  1. Chop dragon fruit, mango, and strawberries into dice-sized cubes, or whatever small shape you prefer, and freeze them solid. (Optional: Use the store-bought frozen fruits if you don’t want the hassle)
  2. Add the frozen fruit and half a cup of full-fat coconut milk to a blender or food processor bowl. Feel free to gradually add the coconut milk to nail the consistency.
  3. Blend or process until the fruits are broken up. Continue to process until you have soft ice cream consistency that is both thick and creamy.
  4. Fill a bowl with the dragon fruit smoothie and top with chocolate chips, dice-sized cubs of dragon fruit, and some chia seeds for your daily dose of Omega-3 fatty acids. Feel free to add whatever toppings you may like.

Notes

  • Since I’m able to find these fresh fruits at a very affordable price, I don’t see the value in buying them already frozen. I’m aware that fresh dragon fruits in the States are hard to come by, so by all means, get yours frozen.
  • Be conservative when adding the coconut milk as you don’t want the texture or consistency to be TOO creamy.
  • I’ve used three different toppings, but feel free to go wild and use seven if you like! I stuck to a semi-healthy combination. 🙂
